SOUTH AND CENTRAL AMERICAN REGIONS

  • Argentina: Wow! Director Jorge Ovando writes: “We are deeply grateful to God to have begun the new year completing “the Great Commission” exactly as the Bible says: ‘Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching…preaching the good news of the kingdom” (Matt 9:35). From Jan 3 until Jan 12 we have carried out trips to different cities with the purpose of extending the Kingdom of God…In total, we distributed more than 3,500 evangelistic pamphlets and God gave us the great joy of seeing our people (adults, youth and adolescents) preach the Gospel.” Rejoice with Jorge that as a result of this house to house evangelism, between 50-100 new believers were added to the Kingdom! His prayer requests: 1) to consolidate the mission work in these 9 new places 2) for financial resources to make renovations on the school ($1,700), and to pay rent at the San Cristobal church ($200/mo), salary of 4 pastors ($140/mo), and scholarships for 20 school students ($35/mo).

  • Bolivia: Director Miguel Sanchez writes: “I went to the city of Tupiza visiting the Associate Discipleship School (ADS)…I visited new churches in Totora and Campo Grande with the Word of God and the preaching in these areas resulted in 24 people being saved and 110 new brothers using SLM materials. There are now 134 people being discipled by the materials.” Let’s praise God with Miguel (!), and pray for a $200 deficit of finances for this trip.

  • Brazil: Director Jim Leonard and family report the following: their family traveled to Argentina January 25 for two and a half weeks of ministry. Julie ministered to a women’s conference sponsored by Baptist Mid-Missions, Jim spoke in several churches, and they visited SLM in Argentina. Please pray for: 1) Julie teaching a Pastor’s Wife’s class every Wednesday at the Seminary 2) Jim who is occupied with the construction projects and daily administration of the college and correspondence school 3) completion of the New Jerusalem Baptist Church construction 4) completion of the Seminary Chapel by July when their 60th anniversary will be held.

  • Chile: Please pray for the Salazars who are in the midst of Vacation Bible School at a rural church. Also please pray for the resources to purchase a new video projector – theirs was just stolen from their car.

  • Guatemala: We praise the Lord for Bob and Wanda McRae who are undertaking the revitalization of the SLM DTB in Guatemala. They report that there are over 3,500 students, and 100 cadets at the police academy have enrolled. Please pray that 1) internet access can become available so they can reach university students 2) 20 discipleship schools can be started around the country in 2006 where the lessons can be graded. Let’s continue to pray for Bob and Wanda as they make 3-4 trips to Guatemala each year.

  • Guyana: Director Winston Abel asks prayer for the heavy rains which occurred since the beginning of January. Many towns and villages have been flooded, crops lost, and residents forced to evacuate. Many of the SLM students are in these affected areas and need your prayers. Winston writes: “I thank God for the privilege He gives His people to evangelize and disciple the lost throughout the world. SLM Guyana branch continues to pray for missions and missionaries and faithful workers who labor for the Lord wherever He places them universally despite the numerous hostility and persecution they encounter.”

  • Haiti: Uphold the Spaldings as Art and his family continue to minister in a very tense and at times dangerous city, Port-au-Prince. Please pray for: 1) the church as they seek a Haitian pastor, and for Art as he continues to share the ministry among pastors 2) the provision of 10,000 copies of all the SLM lessons annually to Haiti 3) their 2 boys will desire to study for at least a year in a Bible college upon graduation 4) the need of a Bible School on the plain in Haiti.

  • Jamaica: We (Mrs. Joy Webster reporting) praise the Lord for 1) 7 new study groups that signed on between Dec and Jan, 2006 2) great strides made with the school programs in the Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine parishes. We are truly encouraged by the response 3) the Salvation Army in Montego Bay will now be using the SLM courses 4) for the introduction of the courses in the St. Mary parish. Please pray for : 1) the DTB to handle the backlog of courses and student demands because of the failure of various pieces of equipment and vehicle failure in Dec/Jan 2) someone to replace Sharlene Russell to be a liaison to the St. Elizabeth schools 3) George Webster’s health – now stable 4) God to overrule in the election of a new party President for the People’s National Party (and ultimately Prime Minister of Jamaica) on Feb 25, 2006.

  • Mexico: Manuel and Ruth Lopez praise the Lord for: 1) the response of local churches to the offer of Bible courses 2) an anonymous gift to the ministry 3) medical improvement for Manuel’s father. Please pray for: 1) the annual Disability Awareness Conference on Feb 22-23, for the camp for the disabled Feb 24-26. Many unbelievers will be in attendance 2) Christian, a 6 year old autistic boy with whom Ruth is working 3) for the Lopez’ children as they make important decisions in their young adult lives.

  • Peru: Pablo Correa is now back in Peru, and asks prayer for: 1) funds and personal support to return to the ministry in Peru full-time 2) for a car and office supplies 3) open doors to share the Word of God and 4) for their children remaining in the US to continue to serve God with all their lives.
