Ghana, with its population of over 19 million citizens, has been
predominantly Christian. However, in recent years Islam has become a threat to
Christianity not only in Ghana but also in the rest of Africa.
Having gained its independence in 1957, Ghana's political scene was very
unstable through the 60s and 70s. In 1992, the people approved a new
constitution bringing back multiparty politics. Since then Ghana has been moving
slowly but steadily toward economic prosperity and political rest.
Ghana contains a central belt of forest with much low-lying savannah regions.
Its most famous possession is the world’s largest artificial lake, Lake Volta.
In 1964 The Akosombo dam was built on the Volta River resulting in this man-made
lake.
The life expectancy in Ghana is 57 years of age and is dropping due to the
increasing spread of AIDS.
