Togo is a small country located in northwest Africa, with Ghana on its
eastern border, Benin to the west, Burkina Faso to the north, and the Gulf
of Guinea, in the Atlantic Ocean to the South. It has approximately 5.1 million people.
The people of Togo speak mostly French. Other local languages
include Mina (in the south) and Dagomba (in the north).
Its capital city, Lome, has approximately 600,000 people.
Lome was once a major tourist attraction, with its Southern end
being the coast, but now the Tourists have dwindled to a small number.
Togo is a very poor country with 32% of its people below the poverty
line. The average person living in Togo will live about 55 years.
About 65% of the people there are employed in commercial or subsistence
farming. Cocoa, coffee, and cotton are the major crops.
In a normal year Togo can completely provide for itself, as far as
foodstuffs go. In industry,
phosphate mining is the main activity.
The country of Togo is ruled, in theory, by a multiparty government but
in truth the military has the real power.
