Uganda, a landlocked country, bordering
Sudan in the North, Republic of Congo in the west, Rwanda and Tanzania in the
South, and Kenya in the East, lies astride the equator. It has one of the
best-irrigated areas of Africa since Lake Victoria and the Victorian Nile
flowing through much of the country. However, Uganda includes semi-desert areas
in the northeast.
Bwindi National Park encompasses one
of the last remaining habitats of the mountain gorilla. Other animals you might
see there are elephants and the giant forest hog. In addition the park is known
for its richness in African flora and fauna.
Located in the capital city, Kampala,
the Uganda Museum houses a collection of traditional musical instruments and
visitors are encouraged to try them.
Uganda, slightly smaller than Oregon,
is home to over 23 million people. Over 50% of the population is under 15 years
of age, and the life expectancy is only 42.9 years.
Under Idi Amin, Christians were
severely persecuted, and the Muslim minority was favored. Now, there is
religious freedom.
