The Country

The Republic of India dominates the South Asian subcontinent, bordering the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. While the land of India is a little over one third the size of the US, it contains over three times the number of people.

English is an important language for national, political, and commercial communication; however, Hindi is the primary tongue of 30% of the people. There are 24 languages spoken by over a million persons.

India's greatest tourist's treasure is the Taj Mahal, the most lavish monument ever built for love. It took over 23 years to complete this shrine that is located in Agra about 125 miles from Delhi.

The social and religious structures define this nation’s identity and remain unchanged for at least 4000 years despite efforts from the outside to alter them. As technology enters we begin to see some changes in the cities, but in essence rural India does and will remain the same.

Religion trickles into ever facet of Indian life. India's major religion, Hinduism, is practiced by approximately 80% of the population. Hinduism is not a proselytizing religion since you cannot be converted: you're either born a Hindu or you're not.
