SLM Int. - Regions of Outreach: - Asia: - Korea: KOREA Milestones
The Country
Korea is a very mountainous country with every square inch of flat ground being used for agricultural or urban development. With nearly 50 million people and only the area of 38,000 square miles the population is very dense. Seoul, the capital, has over 10 million people in a very small area. Most of the apartments are 20 stories high and of exactly the same design. Although descendants of the Manchurians and Mongolians, Koreans are a homogeneous people with language, culture, and customs unique to them. The Koreans are known to be generous, warm, and kind. Yet, with Japan directly to its east and China to its West, it has been an unwilling player in centuries of battles. Ironically war has given Seoul a delightful blend of the past and present with centuries-old temples, palaces, pagodas, and pleasure gardens hidden amongst 12-lane freeways and many high-rises. Confucianism, a system of ethics developed in China around 500 BC is the foundation for Korean society. It promotes strong devotion and respect for parents, family, friends and those in positions of authority. On a broader scale it emphasizes justice, peace, education, reform and humanitarianism. The theory of Yin-Yang, a Korean philosophy is seen in every aspect of life. All objects and events in the world are expressed by the movement of yin and yang. They are opposites, and yet they cooperate in harmony. The moon is yin while the sun is yang; the earth is yin and heaven is yang; a woman is yin, man is yang; night is yin, day is yang; winter is yin and summer is yang. On the Korean flag, the top half of the circle is red (yang) standing for positive forces; the bottom is blue representing negative forces. The Missionary
Paul and Sue Bahn began a ministry for Source of Light in Korea in 1985. Since then many souls have been saved, several churches have been planted and are still thriving. At the present there is religious freedom in South Korea and we need to take advantage of this opportunity while the doors are open. Contacting Source of Light - Korea
