The Country

The Philippines, stretching hundreds of miles southeast of the Asian continent, is made up of over 7000 islands which 70 million people call home. The Philippines is the only nation in Asia with a Catholic majority, probably coming from the fact that for over three centuries (1565-1898) these islands were under Spanish colonial rule. For the first half of the 20th century, the islands were a U.S. territory, until the Japanese invaded in World War II. After the war, they gained their independence from the United States. Filipinos have been under many governments, but the individual's real need is the salvation of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Ministry

PhilSOL (Philippine Source of Light), was launched in 1980 by Dr. Luz Nacionales, a Filipino national missionary serving under Source of Light. Since 1980, over four million Bible lessons have been distributed throughout the islands. Leading people to the rule of Christ, one by one, PhilSOL takes the lessons into schools, colleges, military bases, prisons, and private businesses. A large number of Associate Schools have also been established.

This is not an easy place to minister the Gospel. Evangelical missionaries have to face opposition from Catholic, Islamic, and local animist religions when trying to minister to the people. In recent days, there have been Christians martyred for their faith in Christ. Still, among all of the obstacles, Filipinos are being called out of the darkness into Christ's light. Pray that the Light of Life will shine into the hearts of this nation.
