The Country

Located in Southeastern Asia, between Malaysia and Indonesia, Singapore became the focal point for Southeast Asian sea routes. Overcoming its dearth of natural resources Singapore has become one of the largest economies of Asia. Exports, particularly electronics and chemicals, are the main economy stimulators.

Singapore, lying on the equator, consists of the main, low-lying Singapore Island and 58 smaller islands within its territorial waters. It is like a giant sauna with the temperature always staying between 68° and 86° F with a humidity of approximately 75%.

Chinatown is Singapore's cultural heart and still provides glimpses of the old ways with its numerous temples, decorated terraces, and its frantic conglomeration of merchants, shops, and activity. Rickshaws are not as popular now, but some are still operating.

Densely populated, over 4 million people live in this land areas estimated to be about 3.5 times the size of Washington, DC.

There are four official languages of Singapore. These are Mandarin, Malay, Tamil and English. However, since English is taught in the schools it has a unifying affect. Most of the children while being taught English at school also learn their mother tongue at home to insure contact with their traditions.

The variety of religions found in Singapore is a direct reflection of the diversity of races living there. The Chinese are predominantly followers of Buddhism and Shenism (deity worship), though some are Christians. Malays are overwhelmingly Muslims and most of Singapore's Indians are Hindus; there are, however, a sizeable proportion of Muslims and Sikhs amongst the Indian population.
