The Country

Romania is an oval shaped country located in southeastern Europe bordering the Black Sea. This location has given Romania control of the most easily traversable land route between the Balkans, Moldova and Ukraine. Romania is divided naturally into three major geographic areas. The forested Carpathian Mountains make up about one third of the area, next we find tablelands and hills of orchards and vineyards, and the last third is made of a fertile plain where grains and herbs are grown.

Among the mountains you will find more that 40 glacial lakes, the highest of which is Lake Mioarele at 2282m(7484 ft). The Romanians boast of the highest road in Europe, the Trans Fagarasan highway that runs through the Balea valley from north to south across the mountains.

Though reeling from a dying economy (originally under communism), Romanians are very hospitable people. They live in a land of contrasts---horse drawn carts jostling for space against fast cars, and satellite dishes standing in the back yards of their medieval farmhouses.

This is the only country with a Romance language that does not have a Roman Catholic history. Romania is 86% Romanian Orthodox, 5% Roman Catholic, 3.5% Protestant, 1% Greco-Catholic, 0.3% Muslim and 0.2% Jewish. Throughout the communist regime and revolutions the Roman Orthodox Church worked in connection with the government. Today most of the leaders in the Orthodox Church are dogmatic, wealthy, and very hierarchical.

The Ministry

Cristian Oprea directs SOLM's branch office in Brasov. The office, which services seventeen associate schools, is located in Hope Baptist Church. Cristian is very involved in church planting using the SOLM lessons for Bible studies. He also is very skilled in the translating of courses into Romanian.
