HAITI

Milestones

  • 1998 In July,7 Associate Schools were started.
  • 1999 God provided an opportunity to send 4 tons of SOL lessons to Haiti free of charge.
  • 1999 In August, Source of Light – Haiti was incorporated as a Branch Office. Randy Christopher was named as director.
  • 1999 In October, the Branch Office was dedicated to God.

The Country

The name “Haiti” is an Indian word meaning “high ground.” Located in the Caribbean and occupying the western third of the island of Hispaniola, Haiti is a mass of mountain ranges. La Selle, situated southeast of the capital Port-au-Prince, is the highest peak at 2,674m.

Port-au-Prince, not known for its architectural grace, makes up for this with its striking natural physical features. A wall of mountains beyond a plain rise to the north, La Gonave island lies in a horseshoe bay to the west, and steep mountains tower over Port-au-Prince to the south. During the past few years the population has increased unbelievably from 150,000 in 1954 to over 2 million now. This huge increase has resulted in overcrowding with multitudes spilling on to the sidewalks and into the streets.

Ninety-five percent of Haiti’s population is of pure African descent. Mulattoes, the descendants of unions between French masters and African slaves, make up the rest of the citizens. The blend of African and French influences has made this country’s culture very unique. Haiti is famous for being the only country to have a successful slave revolt. In 1804 the Haitians, inspired by the French Revolution, massacred the French landowners and established the first black republic in the world. Whites have not governed Haiti for two centuries.

The country is very poor resulting in the lowest standard of living in the Americas. Eighty per cent of the population lives below the poverty line. Not only poor in economic standards, the Haitians are poor spiritually with eighty per cent of the people Roman Catholics and over half the population practicing voodoo. The life expectancy in Haiti is just 44 years of age.

The Ministry

This is one of the newest Source of Light branches. However, the new branch, the associate schools it serves, and the Madison Correspondence School have not been able to keep up with the requests for Bible lessons.
