The Country

Strategically located 90 miles south of Cuba between the Cayman Trench and Jamaica Channel and we find Jamaica, the third largest island in the Greater Antilles. The majority of the population of two and a half million are of African and African-European descent; however this population also includes minority groups of Chinese, Indian, Portuguese, German, and English. The motto that unifies these many different people is “Out of Many, One people.”

Jamaica is often called the Island of Springs and truly the plush vegetation found there is beautiful. Rhythm is the diet of the Jamaicans and you will find music everywhere.

In 1999, the Jamaicans experienced low economic conditions, which resulted in increased civil unrest and a rising crime rate. The government is working to encourage investment in the productive sectors, maintain a competitive exchange rate, and stabilize the labor force.

Have you ever been “liming?” No it does not have anything to with limestone. When the Jamaicans get together they enjoy “liming” which is what we would call swapping stories. Though English is the official language, many people enjoy listening to the “Jamaican Talk” which is a local dialect spoken in a musical lilt. One of their favorite phrases is “No Problem, Mon.”
