SLM Int. - Regions of Outreach: - South America - Bolivia: Milestones
The Country
The Republic of Bolivia, named in honor of the great independence fighter Simon Bolivar, gained its freedom from Spanish rule in 1825. However, it's almost continuous unrest is evidenced by nearly 200 coups and counter-coups. A relatively democratic civilian rule was begun in the 1980s, but government officials are battling long-lasting problems of poverty, social unrest and drug production. This country is plagued with 70% of its population of 8,000,000 below the poverty line. Although landlocked, Bolivia (located southwest of Brazil) shares with Peru the control of Lago Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake. With its rugged Andes Mountains and lowland plains of the Amazon Basin, Bolivia is a picture of geographic contrasts. The contrasts continue through the economic aspects. While it is one of the poorest Latin American countries, it is the third-largest producer of coca. Bolivia is very poor in another area. Ninety-five percent of the people are Roman Catholic. The Rustines (SOL missionaries to Bolivia) have been carrying the gospel into the public schools in Chane, Bolivia. The Education Department has already granted them permission to offer the SOL lessons in every public school. They also hope to reach the rural area with the lessons.
