The Country

Guyana is located in Northern South America and boasts a population of a little over 700,000 people. It is the only nation in South America where English is the official language. This seems a little strange since Guyana is often known as the land of six peoples --- a phrase referring to the multi-ethnic makeup of its population. East Indians represent the largest group with 51%, while the indentured laborers from India and the Africans compose 38%. The Chinese, the Europeans and the Amerindians compose the remaining 11%. In addition to these peoples, it is home to over 700 native species of birds including the Harpy Eagle, the world’s largest eagle; the Toco Toucan, famous for his huge beak; the Scarlet Macaw, one of the world’s most colorful birds; and the red-billed Toucan, whose loud call signals much rain.

Guyana derives its name from an Amerindian word translated “land of many waters.” This is an accurate description of Guyana with its 275 waterfalls, 18 lakes and vast areas of tropical rainforest. Kaieteur Falls with its perpendicular drop of 741 feet, is about five times higher than Niagara. This 741-foot span of water mist, rainbow colors and supernatural roar continues to be the most popular attraction.

Guyana received its independence in 1966 and began a hard road economically. 1999 marked the fifth year in a row of economic growth of 5% or better. Electricity has been in short supply but the privatization of the sector in 1999 is expected to result in steady improvement.

The Missionary

Over the past 40 years a native Guyanese lady has been serving the Lord in this very small, poor country. The government officials would trust only her with the food and clothing to distribute to the needy people. They knew she would be honest and diligent. Many of them did not realize a higher official had entrusted her with the valuable treasure of salvation. Many times she has been allowed to visit the prisoners on “Death Row” in Georgetown and when they were willing she has led them to the Lord.

Miss Emily Chung faithfully led the SOL branch distributing Bible lessons, food, and other necessities to the Guyanese. She fulfilled her purpose here on earth unitl the Lord called her home in 2003.

The ministry still continues under the capable leadership of the new director, Winston Abel, who took over in 2003.
