SLM Int. - Regions of Outreach: - South America - Peru: PERU Milestones
The Country
Peru is a developing country with a growing economy and expanding tourism sector. Following twelve years of military rule, in 1980 Peru returned to a democratic government. Bold reform programs combined with progress in curbing guerilla movement and drug trafficking have produced some economic growth. In spite of these good changes, the main threat to enduring stability is unemployment and poverty. The most fascinating thing about Peru is the multiple layers of great civilizations. There was a rich heritage to be found in this “New World.” The oldest continuously inhabited city on the American continent is Cuzco, Peru, the hub of the Inca Empire. One cathedral in Cuzco was begun in 1559. In addition the fascinating culture we find some treasures geographically speaking. The Pan American Highway runs along the coastline. Just a little further inland we find the beautiful Peruvian Andes, which are home to millions of highland Indians who still speak the ancient tongue of Quechua and maintain a traditional way of life. The eastern half of Peru is occupied by the Amazon Basin, which occupies half of Peru and is one of the world's top 10 biodiversity 'hot spots.' The Colca Canyon, which is thought to be the world’s deepest canyon, is within visiting distance from Arequipa. Peru shares the highest navigable lake in the world, Lake Titicaca, at 3820m (12,530ft), with Bolivia. Due to its high altitude the air is unusually clear and the azure waters very striking. Along with the rich heritage of an old civilization, come the stories and myths of “many gods.” Peru with its 27 million people is mostly Roman Catholic. Source of Light longs to get the story of the one true God to this Spanish speaking country. Contacting Source of Light - Peru
